FRINGE: Wee Andy – Theatre – Holden Street Theatres – 4.5K

This is one of those shows which remind you that truly moving theatre does not need to be complicated or flashy; the most important facets are the performances of the actors, the eloquence of the writing and the power of the story being told. Wee Andy is nothing but quality in all of these areas. 4.5K

FRINGE: Belt Up Theatre’s The Boy James – AC ARTS – 4.5K

This is a powerful and affecting show, the themes and feeling of which draw you in and pierce your core. The trio of actors create an intense dynamic, as relationships change and control shifts from one to another. 4.5K

FRINGE: Belt Up Theatre’s Outland – AC ARTS – 5K

Blending the life of author Lewis Carroll with a condensed version of his story Sylvie and Bruno, this piece captures the absurdity of his writing, the nostalgia for childhood which sits at the back of your consciousness, and the magical spark that can only be created by live theatre. This is a piece which will excite, delight, bemuse and amaze. 5K

FRINGE: The Disappearances Project – Theatre – AC ARTS – 3K

The Disappearances Project was certainly intellectually engaging, but it would be a stretch to define it as entertaining. If you’re up for a bit of deep thought and want to learn more about the subject matter though, it’s a good way to do so. 3K

RAW: Holding the Man – State Theatre Company – Dunstan Playhouse until Nov 13 – 5K

Holding the Man manages to achieve that highly sort after balance between uproarious comedy and intense drama. Under the direction of Rosalba Clemente, it has you laughing uncontrollably at one point and fighting back tears at another. 5K

RAW: Beauty and the Beast – Northern Light Theatre Company – Until Oct 29

Overall this is a pleasing, quality production of a musical that will be very dear to many. It was a fun way to spend three hours, revisiting a childhood love.

RAW: The Mikado – G & S Society – Scott Theatre until Oct 29

This is another impressive offering from the G&S Society, who continue to produce high quality shows, featuring the work of very talented local artists. Fans of G&S will no doubt lap this production up.

RAW: OzAsia Festival – Shugo Tokumaru – Space Theatre – 4K

“Quirky pop” is probably the closest you’ll get to summarising the sound of Shugo Tokumaru. We heard pieces akin to mamba, 60s Brit-pop, 80s love ballads, and even a good ol’ country hoe-down. The crown went away invigorated and impressed. 4K

RAW: Cabaret Fringe – Galonka and Tzigane – Nexus – 4K

Tzigane eased us into the evening with a short yet varied set, prior to the energetic whimsy of the main act for the evening, Galonka. With the later, it was all a lot of fun, with jokey banter amongst the members between, and even during, songs, but there were also beautiful melodies played on violin and clarinet to the soulful backing of guitar, mandolin, contrabass and piano accordion. 4K

RAW: Cabaret Festival – Amy Housewine: Back to Crack – Banquet Room – 4K

Just how many songs changed to be about drugs can be funny in a row? Performer Lisa Adam, and co-writer Trevor Ashley, have structured the evening well to ensure this doesn’t get old. Adam has a wonderful voice, certainly matching the vocal talents of the lady that is her inspiration. 4K
