More Information With… Anthony Kupinic (Pludo/ex-A Sound Mind)
The former singer of A Sound Mind has gone solo, releasing the new album ‘The Only Thing Certain Is The Future’ under the moniker, Pludo.
What’s been your greatest personal success/high point in your music career so far? And what is the next goal you’re aiming for?
Getting a track on the AFL Grand Final and the 2011 NFL Superbowl were probably write up there, alongside the very first show when I looked out and saw a bunch of people that I didn’t know who all knew the words. I can’t explain how good a feeling it is to write a song and then suddenly at some point hundreds of people are screaming it out at the same time with you. It’s amazing to think that what you conjured in your bedroom has resonated with people and effected them. I can’t wait for everyone to know the lyrics at a Pludo show. That is by far the number one reason I do it!
Who inspires you on a daily basis?
Street performers! The other day I met a magician who taught me how to spin a toothbrush around my finger. It looks impossible! The first time I saw it I was like “What the hell?” I love seeing stuff I’ve never seen before.”
Who is someone you look up to/respect?
DUB FX. This is an artist that has gotten big with no marketing strategy… just pure talent. He started off on the street, and because he is so good he has gotten to where he is now. I think there is something very pure about his rise, and its very inspiring. He released videos on Youtube of himself playing on the street, and they went viral. Its stories of artists like that that teach record companies and radio stations that fans are the bosses, not them. The Internet is a very interesting platform right now for launching artists. It’s inevitable that in 3-5 years the Internet will dictate to radio and record companies.
Favourite decade?
I’m about to turn 30 so hopefully it’s the next decade.
Best concert you’ve attended?
Florence And The Machine.
Greatest famous Australian in your opinion?
Gotye.
Best place in the world?
Hmmm. Toss up between Hawaii, Bali and a little town in Croatia, called Pula.
Describe yourself using a famous movie title?
In bed “As Good As It Gets.” In life, “Lost In Translation” (…Holy s***! I am watching TV and just as I wrote this, and they started talking about it…WTF?)
Pludo Album Launch Party dates TBA along with a national tour and UK and Germany tours.

Interview with Anthony Kupinic (Pludo/ex-A Sound Mind)
A Sound Mind. A name that will no doubt mean little to some, and so much to the rest. Their unique brand of symphonic hard rock was something to behold live.
They toured across the country for many years, packing out venues everywhere. They released a hugely successful album, and gained international recognition, with one of their songs being played during the 2011 NFL Superbowl Highlights, among other things. They were a unique act, which was in part due to their promotional techniques.
It is largely believed that one of the only ways to gain attention and success in the Australian music industry of today is to go via the radio station, Triple J. Their offshoot program, Triple J Unearthed is dedicated to “unearthing” the talent that lies dormant around the country. Sadly however, many feel this is now the only way to achieve their desired popularity. A Sound Mind were indeed a breath of fresh air, as they turned down the popular option, and instead went straight to the fans to kickstart their career. They spent their few days before each show in all the cities interacting with the public. They sold CDs. They sold tickets to the gigs. They even busked occasionally. This method not only worked for them, but it had a lasting affect on their fans.
“I like street promotion because it’s direct to the fans. If the music is any good, then people will buy it. The day people stop buying my music on the street is the day I think about getting a job.”
After A Sound Mind officially split in December 2010, Anthony Kupinic, the lead singer of ASM, was quick to announce his solo project, curiously titled, Pludo and the debut album The Only Thing Certain Is The Future. As for the choice of the particular name?
“Well I just don’t think I have a cool enough name. I mean “Anthony Kupinic” is no Jack Black. Everybody keeps asking me what Pludo means, which is quite a valid question. In all honesty, it means nothing at all. That’s the way I wanted it. I wanted a name that was just my name. When people punch “Pludo” into Google they will find just me.”
Despite the great success story that is A Sound Mind, the spotlight is firmly on Kupinic now, and by the reaction to the new material already, he seems destined for great things once again. But, what is it like going solo after all these years?
“Everything has its pros and cons. What I have learnt from this record is that for the actual writing and putting it all together, I work far better on my own. I can do a track in three-to-four days and love it. If it’s co-written, it can take over a month and I still won’t be happy with it.”
Despite certain sonic similarities to the music of ASM, Pludo is more in the realm of electronica than before, with acts like Moby and Bjork being major influences, along with Australian acts like Pendulum and The Potbellez. So the style of music has changed, has the songwriting process?
“I think it’s more the recording process that changed than the song writing itself. Instead of writing a song (lyrics and chords) and then adding drums, guitars and orchestra with the guys, I now just instantly write and record it. Lyrically, I think my motivations have changed a bit. It hasn’t really been a conscious decision just a natural evolution. I don’t really have any rules about what I can write a song about and what I can’t. Music is still my psychologist, that’s the one thing that’s the same.”
Most who know Kupinic through A Sound Mind, would know him purely as the singer and keyboardist. However, on the new record, he plays all the instruments, in part due to his younger years performing in orchestras and symphonies. It wasn’t until much later that the frontman in him emerged.
“A family friend by the name of Ines Medica (who was a singing teacher), starting getting into me and telling me I should start singing. She was very persistent! I think one of the hardest things about becoming a singer is at some point in time you have to decide you are a singer and take it seriously. It’s a weird crossover from being the person that only belts it out in the shower, to the person that when someone asks you “are you a singer?” and you say, “yeah I am!” Medica was a huge help in getting me to take myself seriously as a singer. Besides, I wanted to start a band and there was nobody else that wanted to sing, so I got the gig.”
Pludo, for now, is a solo project, but Kupinic will be taking the music on the road in the coming months to support the album’s release, and has been hard at work finding members to perform with. However, if you think you need to just play your instrument well to tour with him, you’ll be sorely mistaken.
“They can’t have a job, they can’t have a girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife or kids, and they have to be free to travel a lot. I have no interest in people that do it as a hobby. I am a gypsy really, and I am married to my music, if people don’t share this mindset then it’s plagued from the start. Then of course they have to be amazing. If they can predict the future, have a time machine and know nine languages that would be a great help too. I am also very excited that I have started to play with a drummer who is going to be a permanent addition to Pludo. I met him when he was playing buckets, busking on the street. He has a phenomenal performance energy and I can’t wait to play shows with him!”
As for the not-to-distant future of Pludo, Kupinic is excited about the new opportunities that have opened up for him after all the hard work he has put in.
“I have major support from a management company, a radio promotion team and distributor and a booking agent. This is the first time I have ever had this. I have had such a good response from the industry, so it’s looking like something will stick with radio this time around and I have some tours with some more well-known artists coming up also.”
More than anything, Kupinic’s story is a reminder that success in the music world does not have to be solely determined by others, it can be controlled by the individual if the passion for their art is there, and equaled by their enthusiasm to tell the world about it.
Pludo Album Launch Party dates TBA, along with a national tour and UK and Germany tours.

The Amazing Spider-man 3D – 4K
The Amazing Spider-man brings us a different Peter Parker played by Andrew Garfield, a different love interest, Gwen Stacy as Emma Stone, 10 years after Sony last brought the super hero back to life in the form of Tobey Maguire. The story, well who doesn’t know the story, Peter Parker who grows up with his uncle and aunt is bitten by a spider and develops powers which catapult him into the super hero club and turns to fighting crime.
It seems to be the flavour of the time for Hollywood to reboot franchises, especially comic book super hero’s, retelling stories told over and over trying to entice audiences back with amazing yet over the top special effects thanks to current computer graphics capabilities and of course the added draw card 3D.
So is The Amazing Spider-man any different, the short answer is no. Is it worth seeing, the short answer is yes. Is there anything new to this incarnation of Spider-man besides state of the art special effects and 3D? That can’t be answered in short. Let’s start by looking at the sometimes oversold special effects and 3D. The Amazing Spider-man certainly looks very well done cinematically and has some scenes which work very well in 3D which surely will amaze the young and older ‘children’ in the audience. The story takes Peter Parker on an emotional roller coaster ride as he rediscovers his parents loss, meets his first high school love, loses his uncle, discovers his new found powers as he faces guilt, teenage conflict and accepts that with an unrequested gift of super power comes responsibility.
Overall the story is very well told and uncovers that teenage and emotional side of Peter Parker as he battles not only criminals on the street but deep conflict within and visually the movie takes us on a ride with some quite stunning visuals.
A movie for the whole family.

2012 Spanish Film Festival – Adelaide – Palace – 12-22 July
Salma Hayek, Ricardo Darin and Luis Tosar are just some of the stars of the Spanish-speaking world set to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Spanish Film Festival on the big screen at Palace Cinemas Adelaide July 12-22.
Screening a select programme of the best in contemporary cinema from Spain and Latin America, the festival presents 22 acclaimed feature films across a wide range of genres, with a multitude of Australian Premieres.
The sharp selection includes films from the recent editions of Spain’s own San Sebastian and Málaga Film Festivals, as well as films from many more of the world’s premier film festivals including the very recent 2012 Berlin, Tribeca, and Sundance Film Festivals. Also confirmed is Spain’s biggest domestic box office opener of all time, TORRENTE 4, and the biggest Goya Award (Spanish Oscar) winner of 2012, NO REST FOR THE WICKED, which beat Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In to take out awards in 6 major categories.
Festival Director Natalia Ortiz created the festival 15 years ago and is delighted to have watched it become the leading Spanish Film Festival in the Asia Pacific region. She says, ‘I am thrilled to see the festival celebrating its 15th birthday in 2012. It has been a long and wonderful journey enabling people to experience and to fall further in love with Spanish language cinema. The incredible feedback and response from audiences has always kept my own passion for the industry alive and well, and we are very proud to have introduced the early films of now hugely renowned filmmakers like Oscar winning Alejandro Aménabar, whose first film screened in the first edition of the festival!’
Salma Hayek shines in the OPENING NIGHT film – AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT (La chispa de la vida, Spain 2011) a visually stunning contemporary satire – from the 2012 Berlinale and named the jewel of the Tribeca Film Festival by Indiewire – about an out-of-work renowned advertising executive who suffers an accident and plans to sell the exclusive interview rights to the highest bidder in an attempt to provide for his family. A 15th birthday fiesta with drinks, canapés and a live salsa band will follow the Opening Night screening.
Shortlisted for 2012 Oscar nomination, screened to great acclaim at San Sebastian Film Festival and currently screening in competition at the 2012 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, animation for adults WRINKLES (Arrugas, Spain 2011) follows in the footsteps of last year’s beloved Oscar nominated animation CHICO AND RITA as a festival highlight. WRINKLES won the 2012 Goya Awards (Spanish Oscars) for Best Animated Feature and Best Adapted Screenplay – an incredible win for an animated film, and two weeks ago director Ignacio Ferreras was named one of Variety’s Ten Euro Filmmakers To Watch. The Hollywood Reporter called this charming story of two old men in a nursing home ‘a genuine crowd pleaser deserving of the widest possible exposure’. “It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s sweet, it’s heartbreaking. It’s brilliant.” is how The Guardian’s chief film-critic Peter Bradshaw encapsulated this outstanding Spanish animation, included in his top five films of 2011.
Direct from the San Sebastian Film Festival and the World Competition at Sundance 2012 is the engrossing drama MADRID, 1987 (Spain 2011), directed by David Trueba, younger brother of former festival guest Oscar winner Fernando Trueba and a prominent writer and director in his own right. A compelling and highly cinematic two-hander, it stars the veteran Spanish actor José Sacristán as a respected reporter and the beautiful, young María Valverde as a journalism student who spend the day locked in a bathroom together after a seduction attempt backfires.
CLOSING NIGHT will treat Australia to the insomnia-provoking psychological thriller SLEEP TIGHT (Mientras duermes, Spain 2011) starring a pitch-perfect Luis Tosar (Cell 211, 18 Meals, Jim Jarmusch’s The Limits of Control) as an apartment block concierge in Barcelona who turns on the inhabitants after dark, from Jaume Balaguero, director of the ground-breaking REC.
Further reinforcing Spain’s position at the forefront of the thriller genre is NO REST FOR THE WICKED (No habra paz para los malvados, Spain 2011), – a box office hit in Spain and winner of 6 Goya Awards in 2012, having been nominated in almost every category. A thriller involving a corrupt cop, the Colombian Mafia and North African terrorists, it has been dubbed by Variety as ‘explosive … the kind of movie that gives dramas about bad cops a good name’. From the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival is crime thriller UNIT 7 (Grupo 7, Spain 2012), directed by Alberto Rodriguez (7 Virgins), starring Antonio de la Torre (Cousinhood, Volver), about 4 policemen handed the tough assignment to eradicate drug trafficking from Seville ahead of the 1992 World Expo. In thriller DARK IMPULSE (Lo major de Eva, Spain 2011), Leonor Watling (Talk to Her) stars as a strong principled woman, who gives in to her sexual impulses, with devastating results.
Leading German actor Daniel Bruhl (Inglorious Basterds, Goodbye Lenin!) and Lluis Homar (Julia’s Eyes, Broken Embraces) star in the action packed WINNING STREAK (The Pelayos, Spain 2012), based on the true story of the Pelayo family who travelled the world winning millions of dollars at casinos by capitalizing on a roulette wheel’s imperfection. The real Pelayo family was there to support the world premiere screening at this year’s Málaga Film Festival.
From further afield than Spain, the festival includes films from Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Perú:
Winner of both Best Film and the Audience Award at the Rome International Film Festival, and the 2012 Goya for Best Spanish Language Foreign Film, endearing drama CHINESE TAKE AWAY (Un cuento chino, Argentina/Spain 2011), set in Buenos Aires, stars celebrated Argentinean actor Ricardo Darín (The Secret in Their Eyes, Nine Queens) as a solitary man compelled to take in a Chinese lodger; female writer/director Rosario Garcia-Montero marks herself as one to watch with her feature debut, absorbing drama The Bad Intentions (Las malas intenciones, Perú /Argentina/Germany 2011), a coming-of-age tale of a young girl during tumultuous times in Perú, who convinces herself she will die on the same day her brother is born; from the 2011 San Sebastian Film Festival is the memorable road movie FISHERMAN (Pescador, Ecuador/Colombia 2011), about a village fisherman who encounters a Colombian beauty and finds a box of cocaine washed up on the beach, providing a way out of town for both of them, directed by Sebastian Cordero (Rage).
From Argentina are romantic comedies STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT (Extraños en la noche, Argentina 2012), starring two time Grammy nominated Diego Torres as one of a pair of amateur musicians in Buenos Aires struggling to make ends meet, and audience favourite MY FIRST WEDDING (Mi Primera Boda, Argentina 2011), a crowd pleasing caper set on a luxurious Argentinean estate where the groom (Daniel Hendler, a Berlin silver bear winning actor) tries to postpone his wedding on the day of the event, as he seems to have lost the rings…
In Mexican box office smash hit comedy SAVING PRIVATE PEREZ (Salvando al Soldado Perez, Mexico 2011), the most powerful drug cartel mogul in Mexico embarks on a mission handed to him by the only authority he respects… his mother. Joined by a motley crew of Bandido commandos, he risks his life to rescue his brother from war-torn Iraq. According to Variety, ‘The horrific events in Mexico are proving fertile ground for black comedy, and though “Saving Private Perez” is certainly not the blackest, it may well be the funniest.” Also from Mexico is the award winning feature debut of Kenya Marquez, EXPIRATION DATE (Fecha de Caducidad, Mexico 2011) a dark and inventive feature about a mother searching all over Guadalajara for her missing layabout son.
Comedies from Spain include the endearing COUSINHOOD (Primos, Spain 2010), which follows three cousins Diego, Julian and Miguel as they return to the seaside village of their youth after one of them is jilted at the altar, only to find themselves caught up in further sticky situations, mostly of their own doing. TORRENTE 4 (Spain 2011) was Spain’s biggest domestic film opening of all time. Directed by and starring Santiago Segura (also in Opening Night film As Luck Would Have It and Le Chef), is the fourth story in this phenomenally successful series about a disgraced former cop-turned-private-investigator, full of its trademark gross-out humour and political incorrectness.
Romantic comedies to delight audiences include the witty romantic comedy THE OPPOSITE OF LOVE (Lo contrario al amor, Spain 2011) – set against the backdrop of bustling Madrid, starring Adriana Ugarte (also in Dark Impulse) as a masseuse who has a fling with all three of the handsome firefighters who rescue her from a lift, before one of them tempts her away from her polygamous ways; and Six Points About Emma (Seis puntos sobre Emma, Spain 2012), a captivating film about a blind woman obsessed with becoming a mother. When her boyfriend won’t help her, she goes on a quest to find the perfect man to help her conceive…. In WIDOWS (Viudas, Argentina, 2011), a happily married woman finds a young and attractive woman grieving at her husband’s bedside, much to her surprise!
Family-friendly for the school holidays, SNOWFLAKE, THE WHITE GORILLA (Copito de Nieve, Spain 2011) is seamless combination of animated animals and live action humans. Inspired by the real life albino gorilla and star of the Barcelona Zoo, it screened at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival.
For grown up lovers of swashbuckling adventure is the epic CAPTAIN THUNDER AND THE HOLY GRAIL (Capitan Trueno y el Santo Grial, Spain 2011), a story adapted from the most popular Spanish comics of all time, Captain Thunder, a 12th century knight who travels the world fighting injustice.
The 15th Spanish Film Festival is presented by Estrella Damm and produced with the support of Palace Cinemas, the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs in Spain, the Spanish Consulate in Sydney and Melbourne, The Spanish Embassy, SBS TV and Radio, World Movies, Singapore Airlines, Bocata Spanish Deli, Negociants/Torres Wines and many prestigious Spanish and Australian companies.
