SHORTS Film Festival – Friday Review

By Sam Turner

Friday night at the Shorts Film Festival dealt with the major topics of life, love, death and unconventional uses of fresh produce.  A packed out Norwood Concert Hall was treated to shorts by truly talented Australian filmmakers.

The evening’s showings were bookended by two comedy films.  Owen Trevor’s Two Laps is a heart-warming film about two senior citizens who compete in a swimming race on the same day every year.  It is a beautifully shot film and opened the night’s proceedings nicely celebrating Aussie’s love of competition and joie de vie.  Up next was Rippled, a stop animation music video made by Victorian artist Darcy Prendergast.  Shot using long exposure techniques without any special effects or post-production hokum, this is a very clever exploration of urban landscapes.

Documentaries Murder Mouth and Kia Kaha changed the tone of the evening to one of contemplation and provided two of the evening’s highlights.  South Australian Madeline Perry’s confronting film about the importance of facing up to the realities of living a carnivorous lifestyle provided moments of hilarity, suspense and sadness.  Similarly, Kia Kaha demanded its audience to think about an issue which is too easily put to the back of one’s mind.  Interviews with three Christchurch residents examine the after affects of a catastrophic natural disaster months after it has occurred.  Kat France’s film shows a city which may have had its heart ripped out but it’s irrepressible soul lives on in it’s buoyant citizens.

Contrasting in nearly every way were the films A Few Nervous Habits, a thoroughly original whimsical comedy and Dorothy, a horror movie-by-numbers from Queensland.  Lead actors Astril Pill and Steve Sheehan give a beautifully understated performance in this very funny SA film which told the strange tale of a lady who wakes up to find an orange in her vagina.  Although well crafted, Eros Romero’s Dorothy, on the other hand, relied on the fail-safe ingredients of clowns, dolls and a creepy little girl to produce a middle of the road horror film which brought little new to the table.

Equally, unoriginal was Jeffory Asselin’s The Billabong, a tale of two young boys whose courage and friendship prevail along with an obvious metaphor.  Whilst Steven Robinson’s Donydji may not have been the most stylish piece of the evening it more than made up for it in heart.  Robinson’s look a Vietnam War vets volunteering to help build an Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory said more about Australia in 18 minutes 30 seconds than Baz Luhrman managed in over two and half hours in his 2008 eponymous epic.

The acting in Heck may not have been first class but the subject matter, script and craft made for very enjoyable viewing.  Tanya Goldberg’s film deals with the euthanasia taboo brilliantly in a way that is hilarious, moving and uncondescending.  In contrast, Purple Flowers’ gushy melodrama made me think the Shorts organisers had sneaked in half an episode of Home and Away for a laugh.

Equally out of place, was the next film Post Apolyptic Man.  As with Dorothy, the film was stylish and well shot but lacked in originality.  I assume Nathan Phillips has seen the Mad Max franchise so why he felt he needed to add another with a rubbish title is anyone’s guess.  Remake rounded off the evening nicely with a light comedy exploring the merits of the Hollywood rehash as debated by two bungling burglars and a couple of hapless bobbies.

Gemini Downs Residency at Grace Emily – May

“Super awesome fun times at the Grace Emily this May.” – Gemini Downs

Adelaide’s home of live music, the Grace Emily Hotel, is bracing for an indie pop explosion as quirky seven piece Gemini Downs prepare to kick off their highly anticipated May residency. Each Friday in May the seven piece, armed with tap dancing percussion, a kicking horns section and a wonderfully bizarre collection of instruments will provide a series of fun, raucous and emotional performances.

The band have spent the best part of this year building a new EP with the former head of Sony Music Australia, Wayne Ringrow. “We’ve got so much cool stuff that we can’t wait to share with people”, said singer and guitarist Jessica Braithwaite. “It’s like when you have a secret you’ve been dying to tell someone. And now on Fridays in May we get to finally share it with everyone.”

It’s the first time the band will take to the stage this year, after being forced to call off their recent Fuse Festival performance with The Salvadors when singer and multi-instrumentalist Sean Brathwaite picked up a poorly timed injury from a fall at touch football. “We’ve been busting to get back on stage, and this is it now,” said Sean. “We cant wait to unleash all this cool new music we’ve been working on, and of course, whip out all the old favourites too.”

A host of unique, high class acts are waiting in the wings to make Fridays in May truly special.

May 4th Sean Kemp Solo & Monsieur Swing

May 11th Ghyti & the Philanthropic Orchestra

May 18th Louise Adams

May 25th Swimming

The Grace Emily Hotel is at 232-238 Waymouth Street, Adelaide

The music kicks off at 9.30pm each Friday. Entry is free.

IMPENDING DOOM (USA) FIRST EVER AUSTRALIAN TOUR – TIX ON SALE MAY 11th

IMPENDING DOOM is one of the defining metal bands of our generation who are set to annihilate Australian audiences for the first time this September.

Conjured, cobbled together and consecrated from the same dirty and fertile Inland empire earth that has spawned much of the so-called “deathcore” movement. IMPENDING DOOM has actualized the brand new sub-genre dubbed “Gorship” from a synthesis of savage death metal, intense atmospheric and subversive melody hatched from a formula melding the aggressive angst of Slipknot, the modern metal brutality of Lamb Of God, the stop-start riffage of Fear Factory and the trailblazing experimentation of the Deftones.

IMPENDING DOOM return with their brutal fourth full length album Baptized In Filth, a career defining statement showcasing them at their ‘furious and unforgiving best’- Decoy Music

Hailing from the laid back suburbs of the Gold Coast, PREPARED LIKE A BRIDE are cementing themselves as one of the most exciting and brutal hardcore bands in the country. Having shared the stages with the likes of A Plea For Purging, For Today, The Chariot and House Vs Hurricane, 2012 is set to be another mammoth year with the band preparing to release their new EP ‘A Dangerous Journey’ .

Impending Doom ‘ Baptized In Filth’ is available now via E1/ Shock Entertainment

SHORTS Film Festival – Thursday Evening

By Melissah Picca

The fifth night of the Shorts film festival hosted an all-Australian line-up of films bar one from Singapore.

As a Shorts first-timer I made sure I got there on time to immerse myself in the unknown. After taking in the high ceilings of the Norwood Concert Hall, ordering a platter and drink, I settled in for the night ahead. Amongst the most distinctive were The Bind, 50-50, Steak Knife and Katieland.

The Bind; a film that depicts a corporate lawyer haunted by the child she killed whilst driving and using her mobile. Fear manifests itself within the film with the gentle pitter-patter of footsteps from a child that you cannot see to the slightly off centre, camera angles that purposely enable the viewer to see just enough of what is in store for the main character. A film with a moral to its story, it is both terrifying and perfect.

A refreshing change of scenery and music, the audience is then transferred to the 1930’s in Sydney’s Kings Cross with 50-50. This classy portrayal of a vintage Australian underworld covers drug use, prostitution and romance. It is deliciously rich in colour, quite the opposite to The Bind, yet both have been produced by Annmaree Bell, a true showcase of her abilities.

Steak Knife, a comedy from South Australia, was well received by the audience. The short combines simple Australian humour with the grotesque imagery of a sliced foot as the result of a dare between two housemates. Perhaps to soften the blow for the queasy members of the audience (not mentioning names), there is an element of fantasy incorporated into the camera shots of the stars and urban landscapes that are breathtaking in this film.

This celestial theme was rekindled in the second to last short of the night, Katieland; seemingly a Victorian take on Alice in Wonderland at first glance (it is set in a rabbit infested room full of all sorts), this story becomes more meaningful as the audience is lead to discover the significance of the objects that fill the room, including those extremely close to her heart.

A captivating night comprised of a glorious concoction of short films. The festival provides an exclusive experience to its audiences. This would be why it’s sold out for the last two nights of the season. Moral of this story, get in early for next year’s!

LISA MITCHELL’S NEW E.P. OUT TODAY

GET IN THE SPIRIT WITH LISA MITCHELL

Three years since the release of her platinum debut album Wonder, Lisa Mitchell returns with the release of her new EP Spiritus, out today – Friday 4 May.  The EP features the new single and title track, plus four original compositions penned by the singer-songwriter.

The new video for Spiritus was filmed in the sun drenched fields of Goulburn in country NSW.  Lisa reunited with the award winning UK producer Vanessa Caswill (Revere, The Ryes) who directed videos for Neapolitan Dream, Clean White Love and Coin Laundry.
“The video concept for Spiritus came from Ness’s passionately creative mind,” says Lisa of the video. “This idea of ‘oneness’ became a really big theme in our conversations, something that Ness got from the song and definitely one of the themes within my reason for writing it. As a way of portraying that idea, Ness dreamt up this enormous medallic skirt that would join everyone together by the end of the video. That is very much what the song is about; being alone and not having constant contact with humanity and ‘real life’… And then perspective coming along and joyously reminding you that you ARE whole and together as one with everyone and everything else.”

Lisa will soon return to the stage for the Heavenly Sounds national tour in June.  Set in the architectural splendour, rich acoustics and otherworldly ambience of the church setting, the Melbourne chanteuse will thrill with her delicate vocal style – revisiting captivating tunes from her AMP award-winning album Wonder, the Spiritus EP, as well as an exclusive sneak preview of songs from her forthcoming album.

With Lisa currently putting the finishing touches on her new record due later this year, she once again has the stages of the world in her sights.

NEW RELEASES FROM LISA MITCHELL & SILVERSUN PICKUPS OUT TOMORROW

LISA MITCHELL ‘SPIRITUS EP’

It’s been just under three years since Lisa released her debut platinum-selling album Wonder, embarking on a non-stop touring schedule including international tours with Mumford & Sons, her own headline tours and an inspired set at UK’s legendary Glastonbury festival performing alongside Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Nick Cave.

The single Spriritus, which is Latin for ‘breath’ and ‘Life force’ was written at Lisa’s parents’ home in the country. This EP is the lead up to her forthcoming album to be released later in 2012.

Lisa will be touring the country this June as a part of the ‘Heavenly Sounds’ tour, playing in some of the country’s most beautiful churches and cathedrals with her band and supporting choir.

SILVERSUN PICKUPS ‘NECK OF THE WOODS’

Silversun Pickups (Aubert, Guanlao, bassist/vocals Nikki Monninger and keyboardist Joe Lester) have sold over one million records worldwide. Their first EP, Pikul, was released in 2005 and whilst it hinted at great things to come, no one was quite prepared for the explosion of the band’s debut LP, Carnavas. Released in 2006, Carnavas was the #1 Alternative and Independent record for four consecutive weeks in the USA.

In 2009, Silversun Pickups followed up with the equally powerful Swoon, the record debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 and was in the chart for over 22 weeks on the strength of the #1 Modern Rock smash, Panic Switch.   In Australia, Swoon peaked at #14 on the national ARIA album chart and claimed the coveted feature album position on triple j.

The music of these talented and passionate musicians is a mixture of folk, roots and Celtic bushman punk and incorporates a vast range of instruments such as guitar, violin, tin whistle, djembe and didgeridoo. With a dedicated fan base that continues to grow with every gig, The Timbers appeal to young and old audiences alike with their distinctive brand of passionate, energetic folk-roots music and raucous live performances.

Following the release of their debut EP Greet the Sun in March 2011, The Timbers are back in Adelaide this May for the release of the first single from their upcoming self-titled EP, which will be released later this year. Titled Into the Forest, the single will be officially launched at the Crown and Anchor Hotel on Friday May 18th.

Both a tense pursuit and inspiring call-to-arms, Into the Forest encapsulates all the passion, energy, skill and talent of The Timbers. As a first single it is full of promise as to their upcoming self-titled EP – there is no doubt we will again be charmed by the atmospheric lyrics and vigorous harmonies so distinctive of The Timbers.

RAW – Katrina Lazaroff’s INVOLUNTARY – 4K

Katrina Lazaroff’s INVOLUNTARY Presented by One Point 618 & Adelaide Festival Centre

By Julia George

It isn’t often that solid contemporary dance adapts a lighter, comedic spin. Involuntary does just that, in effortless style. The piece, which could also be described as physical theatre, pokes fun – tongue in cheek – at the hilarity of our era. Endless disclaimers, warnings, rules are highlighted, along with technology, social media, and modern-day relationships.

Involuntary brings to life the parallels between unconscious physical movement and other unconscious behaviors in society. The juxtaposition that as we become more connected digitally we’re becoming less connected physically is an evident theme throughout.

Performers Ninian Donal, Timothy Rodgers, Veronica Shum and Jessica Statton show off their maturity and versatility in this piece.  Not only do they execute the complexity of Lazaroff’s choreography with ease, they are also great actors and their theatricality was strong and punchy.

The projection and lighting (Nic Mollison), and soundtrack (Sascha Budimski) were well presented and complemented the choreography and performers.

A realisation of 21st century complexities, Involuntary will make you think (and laugh) at all the automatic and unconscious behavior we engage in, but more fittingly the simplistic nature of the beautiful ending scene is a reminder of the simple pleasures of realhuman contact.
