RAW: Jazz Scholarship Winners Announced – Concert Thursday

Acclaimed Mike Nock Trio, past Creole Room musicians and Jazz SA scholarship finalists perform special concert

Three young Jazz SA scholarship finalists will be joined in concert by the acclaimed Mike Nock Trio, followed by a jam session featuring alumni of the famous former Adelaide jazz haunt the Creole Room.

Brenton Foster, Marty Holoubek and Nick Pietsch have been selected as finalists for the inaugural $5000 Dr Wendy Wicks Memoriam Jazz Scholarship, designed to help launch the career of a young South Australian musician.

These young jazz musicians will perform before the public and a panel of three judges at the special Creole Room Revisited with the Mick Nock Trio Space Theatre concert on 13 October, with the judges selecting the winner of the 2011 scholarship after each of the finalists performs with the Mike Nock Trio.

The evening will open with a set by the Mike Nock Trio and end with the Trio jamming with some of the great musicians who performed at the Creole Room over the years.

Brenton Foster (piano), who is currently studying for his masters degree at the University of Adelaide, is an accomplished pianist performing with groups such as E-Type and his own group, The Brenton Foster Band.

Marty Holoubek (bass), is currently in his final year of studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music at the University of Adelaide. Equally comfortable on acoustic and electric bass, Marty is a very busy musician working with some fo the most acclaimed musicians in Australian including James Morrison and Ross Irwin. Marty was also a finalist in the prestigious Generations in Jazz competition.

Elder Conservatorium of Music award winner Nick Pietsch (trombone) is currently performing with the Mike Stewart Big Band as well as the Atlantic Street Band, Adelaide Art Orchestra and many other groups. Nick has also been a finalist in the Generations in Jazz competition.

“We were thrilled at the number of scholarship applicants and the high standard of these young players,” said Jazz SA Coordinator Mike Stewart.

“It is going to make for a fantastic concert on 13 October with the internationally acclaimed Mike Nock Trio.”

The new Jazz SA scholarship, which will be offered every year, has been developed by Michael Stratmannis in memory of his wife Wendy Wicks, an avid jazz supporter who co-ran the famous Creole Room in Adelaide with him.

SURRENDER TO THE LANGUAGE OF LOVE…

at the 2011 LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL

The oh so seductive charms of Italy are set to beguile us once again, when Palace presents the 12th annual LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL in Adelaide starting today. An event proudly sponsored by Lavazza, who have been delighting coffee aficionados for over a century, Palace Cinemas will be screening over 1000 sessions across five cities, creating the biggest Italian Film Festival in the world, outside Italy!

An event of lingering passion and vibrant emotion, the 2011 edition features a compelling line-up comprising over 30 outstanding movies lovingly selected from a host of globally renowned film festivals including Sundance, Cannes, Berlin, Toronto, Rome and Venice.

“Choosing films for our program is always a very personal experience,” said Festival Director, Elysia Zeccola Hill, “as there are so many movies that we long to share with our patrons, particularly as Italian cuisine, fashion and art have become such a vital part of Australian culture.”

Highlights of the 2011 Festival include: BASILICATA COAST TO COAST winner of Best New Director at the 2011 Italian Academy Awards; Marco Bellocchio’s SORELLE MAI; the hilarious box office hit WELCOME TO THE SOUTH, an Italian take on Dany Boon’s French comedy Welcome to The Sticks; the brilliantly witty WE HAVE A POPE, fresh from Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival, directed by and starring Nanni Moretti; whilst renowned dramatic actor, Toni Servillo, stars in four films – the slow-burn thriller A QUIET LIFE, GORBACIOF, THE JEWEL and the award-winning, star-studded epic WE BELIEVED, screening in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification (known as Il Risorgimento).

Audiences will also be captivated by the on-screen pairing of screen legend Robert de Niro (showcasing his fluent Italian) and the luscious Monica Bellucci who dazzle in THE AGES OF LOVE, the third installment in the wildly popular MANUAL OF LOVE series (also starring beloved comedic actor, Carlo Verdone), whilst 20 CIGARETTES, an ironic drama which has garnered a slew of awards, offers an unconventional take on the Iraqi war. John Turturro’s PASSIONE, an exuberant tribute to the music of Naples is also a must-see film that has been selected for the Festival’s Closing Night Special Event.

The 2011 LAVAZZA ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL will screen exclusively at the Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas from October 12th to 30th.

RAW: Emmanuel Jal – This Friday – Win Tix

World renowned hip-hop artist, peace activist and novelist Emmanuel Jal will be appearing at Adelaide Festival Centre for a one night only performance on 14 October in the Space Theatre and will be supported by Australian turntable legend, DJ Dexter.

Emmanuel Jal grew up as a child soldier in the heat of Sudan’s brutal civil war. With the help of British Aid workers, Emmanuel overcame this unbelievable struggle and has emerged as an accomplished and passionate recording artist. His latest single, We Want Peace featuring Alicia Keys is from his upcoming album See Me Mama, which will be released in late 2011, and is heavily influenced by his background.

Emmanuel’s unique style of hip-hop,“Gospel Rap” with its message of peace and reconciliation was born out of his personal experiences and he has released three studio albums; Gua, Ceasefire and Warchild. His music also features on John Lennon’s Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur. Emmanuel is actively involved in many human rights campaigns and has performed at Live 8, Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Concert, The Concert To End Slavery and Alicia Keys’ Keep a Child Alive Black Ball in London. Emmanuel was one of the faces of Amnesty International’s 2010 World Refugee Day Campaign.

One of Emmanuel’s biggest passions is Gua Africa; a charity he founded to work with individuals, families and communities to help them overcome the effects of war and poverty. In 2011 Emmanuel will be undertaking his Lose to Win Campaign, which will see him visiting up to 200 schools, colleges and universities worldwide to tell his story and raise funds for Gua Africa, Africa Yoga Project and My Start for Windle Trust International.

“I was enormously impressed meeting Emmanuel Jal. He is an extraordinary artist, led by the heart. A man on a mission who I am sure will eventually affect an enormous number of people in Africa at first, and then around the world. I felt I was meeting a man with the potential of a young Bob Marley. RAW: Carclew’s Off The Couch 2012 – Details

Carclew Youth Arts is on the hunt for young musicians, bands and emerging event coordinators aged 12-26 to take part in Off the Couch 2012.

Run annually for the past 16 years, Off the Couch is a series of youth delivered live music events with a focus on independent and unsigned artists. It’s helped participants forge successful music careers locally and interstate.

Off the Couch enables musicians to start building a profile for themselves in the highly competitive world of popular music,” said Off the Couch coordinator Tara Lynch.

The 2012 series will see the exciting addition of ‘headliner bands’ to act as informal mentors to emerging bands and musicians. “I can’t drop names yet but expect some well known SA acts to feature in the gig line-ups,” said Tara.

Off the Couch live music events successfully showcase upcoming local talent to large audiences. “The 2011 Off the Couch program attracted record participant numbers and the six events drew the strongest crowds in the program’s history,” Tara added.

But it’s not just about musicians. Off the Couch events are programmed and delivered by a team of young and emerging event coordinators who participate in an intensive development and training program.

Under the guidance of industry professionals, Off the Couch team members gain hands-on experience in publicity and promotions, marketing, programming, production and delivery.

Off the Couch is the ideal platform for young artists and event coordinators to start establishing professional connections that are crucial in forging a career in the music industry,” said Tara.

Since 1995 Off the Couch has provided performance and development opportunities for 2,500 young and emerging musicians and event coordinators, reaching a total audience of more than 65,000 live music enthusiasts.

Acoustic Club Tuesday successful gigs at the Metro since mid September. A simple premise; A petite stage, four acts and the artistic freedom to perform in a cosy environment. Showcasing some of Adelaide’s best talent and emerging Adelaide’s newest gems.

Acoustic Club Tuesday is for musicians and music lovers. Originally coined as an ‘industry night for musicians’ the night aims is to be just that, creating a new music culture and to provide a stepping stone for emerging artists.

Matthew Vecchio, event organiser touches on the importance of these kind of nights.

“It’s hard for original acoustic artists to have somewhere to play in the CBD, especially emerging artists. Many established venues are preferring to do monthly residencies, this leaves a bit hole in the scene. The Metro and I are trying to address this through Acoustic Club Tuesday.” – Matthew Vecchio

Come down and check out Acoustic Club Tuesday – every Tuesday at the Metro form 8pm. Its Open mic afterwards, so pick up a guitar and play along with us after the show.

RAW: 6 On The Street interview

By Calen Vanstone

Racking up an impressive 18,000 plus views overall on their Youtube channel, the 6 On The Street (alternatively titled 6 on the St) team have undoubtedly been making waves in the South Australian music and film scene. Their 12-part web-documentary series has not only featured some of the best bands our state has to offer, received backing from Carclew Youth Arts, but also the reaction to the series has been overwhelmingly positive.

For Sam Wright, the producer of the series, each episode represents his passion for the music being displayed and the people behind it, as well as an equal desire to understand it. Taking initial inspiration from the European outfit La Blogotheque’s ‘Take Away Shows’, Wright formed a strong unit around him with the aim to produce a similar show here for Adelaide artists. Several months later, after a lot of hard work and countless ideas thrown around, they shot their first episode.

‘The idea became a reality for the team as soon as we shot the first artist, Vorn Doolette. We quickly learnt how an interesting idea can become a scary reality when you lose half your audio of a song and have to loop bird sounds and traffic atmosphere for your whole Sunday afternoon,’ stated Wright.

Wright and the group then turned their focus to more bands from a variety of genres, from The Shaolin Afronauts, to Steering By Stars, to The Beards, to Dialect & Despair, with the majority of the episodes offering a short interview followed by a “street” performance from the band.

‘We were being different because we were shooting artists that were not big names. For 6 on the St, we kept our focus on Adelaide musicians, making quality music. The bands are favourites of the industry, the media, the festivals of Australia, the whispers at the Exeter, the crowd at a basement gig and the late night discussions over Facebook.’

Wright also has a clear idea of where his show fits in the scheme of things among the other “grass roots” organisations supporting local talent. Realising the importance of said initiatives, but also the larger institutions that inject a much-needed boost into these smaller groups.

‘Adelaide could always use more people creating new ideas for the music scene. We need to be sustainable with this and the same people taking part are not going to provide any fresh perspectives, which the arts scene of Adelaide is so desperately craving on a continual basis.’

‘If there was anyone out there with a little idea, I would urge them to create it into a small project, ask their friends for help and action it. The personal fulfillment will far outweigh the work you put into it, I can guarantee.’

Wright and his team have put together a feature-length documentary of the series that will be shown across three sessions at the Mercury Cinema later this month, with the aim of covering a range of topics from tours, festivals and venues to new music platforms and live music in general, which all directly relate to our music scene.

As for the future of the project and their parent organisation, Your Take Sessions, which also hosts three other web series featuring an array of Australia-wide talent, Wright is adamant about continuing to improve and add to the style of their shows, but is unsure on what the future holds exactly.

‘I know there are a few more local acts we want to feature, how we will feature them is another thing all together though. The latest idea is to find an upright piano, haul it out to a deep forest, light a whole bunch of candles and roll the cameras.’

And the six-minute time length restraint they imposed on themselves that helped form the title for the series?

‘It seemed like a good amount of time for a short interview and a song… I wish we could be more mysterious about it.’

The ‘6 On The Street’ feature documentary will be shown at the Mercury on Saturday October 29th, with all the details, session times and tickets available at Mostix. (http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=50240&ref=moshtix&skin=)

RAW: Life After George – Stirling Players – Til 22 Oct

Hannie Rayson’s play starts and ends at the funeral of its main male character, Professor Peter George, with his three wives seated behind the casket. Between, 30 years of his life and times are played out as the incorrigible lover of ideas and idealists fights his public battles while losing his private ones.

After introductions are made by family friend, Duffy (Malcolm Walton), the great man himself (Ernie Tinesz) launches into a passionate monologue to set the stage for the next two and a half hours. Or that is what Mr Tinesz was meant to do. However, large chunks of it were somewhat fluffed and that vital zone of connection between audience and actors that is necessary upfront to make a production work was never much formed.

Not that the players of the three females who had been longest in Prof George’s life did not work stupendously to repair the damage. Shona Benson as Beatrix, George’s first wife who gave up a career to be with her man and was then betrayed was joined by Shelley Hampton (as Lindsay, his second wife), a manipulative and bulldozing creature of academia and Miriam Keane as Ana, George’s and Beatrix’s daughter who even at the end of her twenties suffered greatly from her views of parental neglect and sense of inadequacy, and together managed to get things going again.

Each did praise worthy efforts in their respective roles and held the show together.

The problem of an actor losing their lines is an occupational hazard and criticism of such an event ought to be prefaced always by the phrase ‘there but for the grace of God go I.’ But here however, there seemed most ample evidence that Mr Tinesz simply was grossly underprepared, often it seemed reading his lines on the stage itself, and, as a result, the important nuances of his work that would help build his character in the minds of his audience were also lost.

Life After George is also an extra challenge for a director. John Graham does an excellent job of working his stage with minimal resources and props. However, completing some 31 scenes without one’s main memory being that of actors peeling off to the wings was probably beyond the assets at his disposal, especially in the lighting department.

One can only hope that Professor George gets his act together a whole lot better as the season progresses but as mentioned the work of the three ladies referred to is worth the visit.

RAW: Akunin – Jap Film Festival (Oz Asia) – 4K

By Kosta Jaric

Japanese cinema has been on a decade-long surge to shock or predictably bring manga to the big screen, but with multi award-winning Akunin (Villain) an emotionally powerful film has raised expectations significantly.

Having already been picked up for Western adaptation and based on author Shuichi Yoshida’s crime noir novel, Akunin is a layered multi-character psychological thriller that follows the lives of strangers connected by a murder that stems from an online dating encounter. The victim, the two suspects – one a working class loner, the other a sociopathic playboy – and the family of each drive the story from hereon in as it weaves between the big city and coastal Japan.

Director Sang-il Lee has created an extremely well played out three-act story. As the film progresses, sympathy for certain characters shifts and a greater understanding for improbable actions by the characters takes shape. All the characters are massively flawed and each actor has done extremely well to bring every part of them onto the screen.

Young actors in Japan are feted with roles their counterparts in Hollywood would probably fail to earn, so it’s refreshing to see that the two standout performances are of two older performers – Akira Emoto as the victim’s father and Yuichi’s grandmother, Kirin Kiki. Amazingly stoic, as Kiki’s character’s life spirals out of control she brings so much to such an introverted woman. Emoto is powerful as the old school Japanese man trying to marry honour with emotion.

Eri Fukatsu, playing the naïve Mitsuyo, also does well to convey the helplessness of a girl who, despite knowing the man she is with is a murder suspect, falls in love.

The film does seem to end on many occasions, so coming in shorter than 139 minutes would’ve prevented the blunting of the confronting ending. Beyond this, there’s little to fault in a film with great cinematography besides the understandable sympathy it tries to extract for the murderer.

Complex, dark, compelling and touching – Akunin has all the hallmarks of a great film, because it is.

Kryztoff Rating – 4K.
