RAW: Tommy Little’s Brainthoughts

I’m not going to bore you with too many words… I straight up loved this show!

Tommy Little has the sort of personality you can’t help but like and he immediately establishes an intimate rapport with his audience. A refreshingly honest and open comedian, his award-winning material is broad enough to appeal to a wide audience but is approached from a uniquely original viewpoint. This is 50 minutes of totally original stand-up, and Tommy masterfully holds the audience in the palm of his hand for every minute of it.

Tommy Little is consistently funny – not simply amusing or humorous, but laugh out loud funny.

RUSH to see him! This boy is going to have an incredible future. Put simply, he’s a joy to watch! Oh, and girls, he ain’t half bad looking either…

RAW: Axis of Awesome- Infinity Rock Explosion

So the lead singer of Axis of Awesome looks like Jack Black. You know it and he knows it. Yeah, it’s funny but it’s not the only funny thing the band has to offer. These guys are witty and talented to boot! The keyboard player, who looks like Chicken Little, has a music degree under his belt.

Covering the Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire but changing the lyrics to form a ‘surprise’ song was a highlight as was a song about a superhero titled ‘Skeleton Man’. Not ones to shy away from a shameless plug, the guys promoted and preformed songs from their fictional CDs.

Upon entry to the venue you will be given 3D glasses. To ensure you don’t look like a dork, hold off on wearing the glasses until you are prompted and you will see an exclusive song in 3D. It’s just like Avatar! However, the real climax of the show came towards the end when the band performed their wonderful ‘Four Chords’ song. These guys are very funny. Jack Black, eat your heart out.

RAW: Jamie Kilstein @ Cinema Nova

This show is full on. The comedy is fired at you at rapid pace. Therefore, word of warning: do not come to this show and expect to relax and stop thinking. You really need to concentrate for the entire duration of the show, if you trail off into your own thoughts for even a millisecond, chances are you’ve lost the story when you come back to earth.

However this is brilliant fast paced comedy. Jamie packs it in and covers a lot within the hour. His favourite topics are religion and the Bible (Christians, might be a good idea to give this show a miss), Obama and the War on Terror, and his rebellious yet awkward teenage years which led him to believe his family hated him.

There are some great true life accounts including unintentional shoplifting and the time his mother gave him cigarettes for Christmas addressed from ‘Santa’.

This American comedian really hits home with a lot of his stories and if you have a good attention span, and welcome some fairly confronting topics this is the show for you!

RAW: Gordon Southern – Borders @ Rhino Room

Englishman Gordon Southern delights with his new show ‘Borders’. Playing thickly on his local connections (he is married to an Adelaide girl), Gordon takes you on a tour of the world counterpointed by rites of passage, dogs and cats and food. Flat spots are carried by an array of jingles and background music sets scenes that get lifted yet further by his totally enthusiastic approach and athletic gyrations of face and body. With improv as well as set pieces, Gordon provides an hour full of fun that lifts the spirits. His tales of the dog and the blind chicken are terrific. At the risk of being mocked by him for providing a rating that may be compared (unfavourably) with that of a porn movie, Kryztoff gave it 4Ks.

RAW: Sam Simmons- Fail

Sam Simmons is an oddball.

Original, nostalgic and random are words that describe his fringe show Fail. The show jumps around with Sam dancing one minute and reading a story from a Heinmann Atlas the next.

The show is slightly autobiographical and fans of Simmons will be able to recognise his ‘where did that come from?!’ humour. However, those not familiar with Sam’s work on Triple J and ABC may become a little confused.

The show features one very attractive cabbage, vintage slides and lists of things Sam has failed at.  Audiences are even able to leave the show with ideas on how to cure boredom, such as inner mind quiz shows and one very special game titled ‘carpet or floor.’ If you find Sam Simmons’ other work hilarious, then you’ll love this hour long show.

RAW: Mark Trenwith – ‘Fun’

At the opening, Adelaide native Mark Trenwith made his show’s ethos clear – laughter enjoyed for it’s own sake.

Shortly afterwards, this ethos materialised as chuckling front row audience members came to terms with the reality that they had been left alone to wash dishes and dust the stage.

Offering unusaul impersonations, prop-based jokes, footage of his bold public antics, and a collection of stories based on his attempts to create more fun out there in the world – Mark’s enthusiasm for taking the piss sparkled with national potential.

Now that Rove is gone, who knows?

RAW: Animals, Aliens & Vegetables @ Ambar Lounge

Pity some shows dont run on time. Faced with incredible crowds in the Garden for a later show, I was forced to abandon Animals, Aliens & Vegtables a half hour after it was meant to start and I was still waiting, being told that the show was ‘being set up’.

RAW: Die Roten Punkte – Rock! @ Le Cascadeur (GoUD)

Die Roten Punkte, or The Red Dots, are a brother-sister rock and roll combo straight out of Berlin. The show sees drummer Astrid – fresh out of rehab – and straight edge guitarist Otto, dueling for the audiences attention in a series of hilarious songs and between song banter.

A Pixies-inspired song about a banana, a futuristic keytar number about a robot with intentions of one day being a lion, the ‘first album trilogy’, and an acoustic love song penned for a ‘kind of’ vegan audience member are just a few of the many highlights. Astrid is a riotous highlight, while Otto’s constant posing and Iggy Pop stage moves and windmills make for a thoroughly entertaining show, with laughs never far apart.

If you have any interest in music, see this! If you don’t, you will still bloody love it!

“Be your age or bust” proves a pleasant surprise

If you’re looking for an enjoyable evening out with a locally created show with Adelaidian references “Be your age or bust” could be for you.

Produced by the Royal Adelaide University Old Footlighters Club, the show takes the form of a number of skits bringing to life characters from Adelaide the audience members are likely to know well.

This rag-tag band is doing the show for the love of it – and it shows.  Or rather radiated off the stage and contributed much to the enjoyment of myself and the rest of the audience.  But don’t be fooled – their stage craft, professionalism, and vivacity would leave much younger performers for dead.  At least on stage, for I fear a few chardonnays may be consumed backstage post show!

It was said that some of the performers fear this may be their last opportunity to perform together (pooh-pooh I say!), and they certainly gave it their all, bearing their bodies in lycra costumes where required, discussing bodily changes with aging, as well as numerous skits based on political and social commentary.  However, for those expecting fast-paced, lewd, rude comedy be warned – this is based on a traditional style of entertainment.  All-singing, all-dancing numbers are included.

While the show would be enjoyable for all ages, it holds a lot of its value in showcasing the positive influence so called ‘older Australians’ can have on society;  how much life they still have to give.  Those in the audience who share age milestones with the performers certainly enjoyed the show whole-heartedly.  The perfect show to take your parents or even grandparents to!

RAW: Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones @ La Cascadeur

This brilliant little show takes the simple methods of shadow puppetry and cleverly introduces a charming series of characters in deifferent situations using incredible techniques, coordination and creative and effective handmade props and puppets.

Montreal puppeteer Jeff is is jovial and bouncy, despite the small Monday evening crowd, and his sound effects and sporadic noises not only make him sound like a lunatic, but build up and add to the visual show. Before the smiling crowd moved on, we were left with the thoughts “never underestimate the importance of play”. A clever, fun show which turns something simple into something special.
